Structures of the upper respiratory tract
Nasal Cavities- lie behind the nostrils and form the inside of the nose; most exposed to the impurities of inhaled air but the air is filtered through the stiff nose hairs and mucus membrane.
Pharynx- found at the middle neck; referred to as the throat which is a muscular tube that carries air from the nose to the larynx; it contains the tonsils and auditory tubes.
Larynx- located on the top of the neck and is attached to the lower portion of the pharynx; essential for breathing and vocalizing (vocal cords) and ensures that food will not be stuck in the trachea or airway; contains three cartilages- thyroid, cricoid, and epiglottis.
