Chapter 27 - Self-Quiz - Page 467: 10

Answer

d. taproot system

Work Step by Step

In a taproot system, the primary root is the first root that emerges from the seed and is the largest root in the plant. As the taproot grows, it sprouts smaller lateral roots; the taproot and lateral roots together make up a taproot system. Eudicots typically have a taproot system; however, in some eudicot species, thinner adventitious roots eventually replace the taproot, giving rise to a fibrous root system where no single root dominates.
