Prostaglandins are like hormones because they both are chemicals that affect the functions of other cells and tissues. They are different in that prostaglandins are produced by many different types of cells but only act on cells and tissues that are close by whereas hormones are made by specific cells and travel through the bloodstream to affect the functions of cells and tissues that may be far away from where the hormones are produced.
