Chapter 9 - Section 9.2 - Synovial Joints - Before You Go On - Page 293: 7

Answer

In synovial joints the facing surfaces of the two bones are covered with articular cartilage. These surfaces are separated by a narrow space containing a slippery lubricant called synovial fluid. This fluid nourishes the articular cartilage, removes their waste, and makes movement at joint friction free.
