Inhibin is secreted by the granulosa cells of female ovaries, and the sustentacular cells of the testes. In both cases the target of inhibin is primarily the gonadotrophs of the anterior pituitary. In males, inhibin suppresses the output of follicle stimulating hormones (FSH). This results in a decline of sperm production and a drop in the sperm count.

When sperm count falls below 20 million per ml, inhibin secretion decreases and FSH secretion rises. This is a typical example of a negative feedback mechanism.
