Work Step by Step
Testosterone secretion by the leydig cells and ABG production by the Sertoli cell are responsible for many of the sexual changes that take place during the period of male puberty. However, the increase in libidio and sexual sensitivity are the effects of estrogen. Testosterone is converted by brain neurons to estrogen ; it is estrogen that awakens libido, triggers sexual behavior, and increases sexual sensitivity. Wet dreams often occur as a result of this increased sexual sensitivity.
Throughout adulthood testosterone supports male sexual behavior, as well as other changes and development of the adolescence -adulthood period. Some other changes that begin in puberty include:
Increase in muscle mass, and length and size of bones.
Erythropoiesis, and red blood cell (RBC) count.
In crease of appetite, hematocrit, and basal metabolic
rate(BMR) to values above average female values.
Dihydrotestosterone is a metabolic derivative of testerone.
This androgen derivative has the following effects:
Stimulation of growth of axillary, pubic and facial hair
Darkening of skin
Development of apocrine scent glands
Androgen binding protein(ABP) and testerone combine
to increase sperm production and semen volume.
