Chapter 24 - Section 24.1 - Study Guide - Assess Your Learning Outcomes - Page 944: 1

Answer

Fluid compartments are areas separated by selectively permeable membranes and differing from each other in chemical composition. 65% of fluid is in the ICF and 35% is in the ECF. A typical young adult male is 55% - 60% water.

Work Step by Step

Fluid compartments are just areas where water occurs in the body. The ICF contains about 65% of the water in the body. The ECF contains about 35% of the water. Of the 35% of water in the ECF, 25% is interstitial fluid, 8% is found in blood plasma and lymph, and 2% is transcellular fluid. A typical young adult male is 55% - 60% water. For a 150lb (70 kg) male, the total body water is about 40 L. Women average slightly less. Obese and the elderly can be as little as 45% water.
