Chapter 10 - Section 10.5 - Muscles Acting on the Hip and Lower Limb - Before You Go On - Page 370: 22

Answer

The action of moving the limb forward has the following sequence: First, the foot is flexed upward by the flexor digitorum longus, and the tibialis. Next, the leg is flexed by the the iliopsoas , the semitendinosus and the semimebranosus. The front lower limb is thrust forward by the combined actions of the quadriceps and the sartorius; however, other muscles, for example, the tensor fasciae latae, the pectineus, the adductor longus and the adductor brevis also play lesser roles in this movement.

Work Step by Step

The gluteus maximus and hamstring muscles are responsible for the extension of the hip, and qudriceps and sartorius extend the knee.
