Chapter 3 - Section 3.1 - Measures of Center for Ungrouped Data - Exercises - Page 88: 3.3

Answer

The following data give the ages of all eight from a Chinese Language class: 10, 27, 28, 29,31,32, 35, 55 Because the given data set includes all eight students of the class, it represents the population. Hence, N = 8 we have ∑x = 10 + 27 +28+29+31+32+35+55 = 247 The population mean is: $ μ = (∑x)/N=247/8=30.875 $ Reconsider the example given above, suppose the ages change into following: 27,27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 35, 35 ∑x = 27 + 27 +28+29+31+32+35+35 = 244 The population mean is $μ = (∑x)/N=244/8=30.5$ As illustrated above, outliers can affect the values of the mean.
