Chapter 1 - Section 1.2 - Exponents and Radicals - 1.2 Exercises - Page 24: 98

Answer

8 minutes and 20 seconds

Work Step by Step

How long does it take for light to travel from the sun to the earth. We are given the distance from the sun to the earth, which is 93,000,000 miles. And we are given the the speed of light which is 186,000 miles per hour. So to measure, we simply divide $\frac{distance}{speed}$ $\frac{93000000}{186000} = 500$ seconds Then we need to convert to minutes. $500 / 60 = 8\frac{1}{3}$ So we have 8 minutes and $\frac{1}{3} \times 60$ seconds $\frac{1}{3} \times \frac{60}{1} = \frac{60}{3}$ $\frac{60}{3} = 20$ seconds 8 minutes and 20 seconds
