Chapter 1 - Section 1.2 - Exponents and Radicals - 1.2 Exercises - Page 24: 100

Answer

$5.29007 \times 10^{4}$

Work Step by Step

National debt is $1.674 \times 10^{13}$ and the population is $3.164 \times 10^8$. To find out what each persons share is we simply divide the debt by the population. $\frac{debt}{population}$ $\frac{1.674 \times 10^{13}}{3.164\times10^8}$ When you divide scientific notation you divide the first number of each and you subtract the numerator power of 10 exponent by the denominator power of 10 exponent. $1.674 \div 3.164 = 0.529007$ $10^{13-8} = 10^5$ $0.529007 \times 10^5$ Now we have our answer but it's not in proper scientific notation. We need to move the decimal point to the right one place and to do that we also have to subtract 1 from the power of 10 exponent. $5.29007 \times 10^{5-1}$ Giving us our final answer of: $5.29007 \times 10^{4}$
