Chapter P - Section P.7 - Equations - Exercise Set - Page 108: 158

Answer

Solving radical equations involves squaring both sides, from time to time. By squaring, the information on signs ($+,-) $ may be lost, which leads to a "solution" that either - causes a square root of a negative number, or - causes an equation:$\ \ $ (square root)=(negative number). Neither is acceptable, so these "solutions" are discarded, and are called extraneous.
