Chapter 10 - Section 10.4 - Introduction to Factoring Polynomials - Exercise Set - Page 723: 38

Answer

a) First expression: ($3x^{2}$)(5x+2) Second expression: [($3x^{2}$)(5x)] + [($3x^{2}$)(2)] b)The first expression is the area of the complete rectangle. The second expression is the area of the complete rectangle, but written as the sum of the area of two smaller rectangles.

Work Step by Step

The formula for the area of a rectangle is (length $\times$ width). The picture gives you the value of both the length and width, so simply multiply the two. The length, however, comes in two parts, so add the two numbers to get the complete length (5x + 2). To write the area in a different way, simply use the distributive property on the first expression to get the second.
