Chapter 7 - Measurement - 7.1 Problem Solving with U.S. Measurement Units - 7.1 Exercises - Page 485: 63

Answer

(a) 4560 inches (b) 127 yards (c) 9.5 feet per story

Work Step by Step

We use unit conversions to solve the problem. To do this, we multiply by different fractions until every unit except the final unit we want is cancelled out. Doing this, we find: (a) $$380 \ feet \times \frac{12 \ in}{foot} \\ = 4560 \ inches$$ (b) $$380 \ feet \times \frac{yard}{3 feet} \\ = 127 \ yards$$ (c) We divide the number of feet by the number of stories to find: $$ =\frac{380 \ feet}{40\ stories} \\ = 9.5\ \text{feet per story}$$
