Chapter 7 - Measurement - 7.1 Problem Solving with U.S. Measurement Units - 7.1 Exercises - Page 485: 62

Answer

(a) 8750 tons per week (b) 72.9 tons per hour

Work Step by Step

(a) We use unit conversions to solve the problem. To do this, we multiply by different fractions until every unit except the final unit we want is cancelled out. Doing this, we find: $$ \frac{3,500,000 \ pounds}{day} \times \frac{5\ days}{week} \times \frac{ton}{2000\ pounds} \\ = 8750\ \text{tons per week}$$ (b) We find: $$ \frac{3,500,000 \ pounds}{day} \times \frac{day}{24 \ hours} \times \frac{ton}{2000\ pounds} \\ = 72.9 \ \text{tons per hour}$$
