To round 5.70961 to the nearest thousandth you look at the number in the ten-thousandths position. Since this number is 5 or more, the number in the thousandths position will be increased by 1. The digits to the right of the thousandths place are dropped when stating the rounded number. Since the thousandths place contains a 9, increasing by 1 results in 10. In this case, 0 is written in the thousandths column and 1 is added to the digit in the hundredths column. The ending 0 is not dropped in order to indicate that rounding was to the thousandths place. $5.70961 \approx 5.710$
