Since the rectangular coordinate system is 2 dimensional, an equation can be plotted by a number of paired points. Based on certain values of x, viz 0,1,2,3,4..............etc, we can find values of y. Then these paired points (x,y) can be plotted on the coordinate system. So, when the graph is plotted it provides a geometric picture of how the equation looks like.
