To plot a point (x,y) on the rectangular coordinate system, first plot the x, and then plot the y. To plot the x value on the x-axis, it can be on right side or left side of the origin depending on whether the value is positive or negative respectively. Similarly to plot the y value on the y-axis, it can be on upper side or the lower side depending on whether the value of y is positive or negative. After this one can plot the point on the system which is (x,y).
For example, if we need to plot the point (3,4), i.e. (x=3,y=4), we will go 3 units right on x-axis and then we will go 4 units upwards on the y-direction. Hence, the point is plotted.
