$R(x)=x+1$

We must write a function, $R(x)$, such that $R(1)=2$. There are many possible functions that would satisfy this condition. However, we can use $R(x)=x+1$. $R(1)=1+1=2$ In this function, we are simply adding x to a constant of 1. Therefore, we know that 1 added to 1 will be 2.
