An algebraic expression consists of numbers and/or variables, often with operating signs and grouping symbols. An equation consists of two expressions separated by an equal sign. The equal sign tells us that the expressions on both sides of the equation have equal value. Therefore, $4a-5b$ is an expression, because its components are not separated by an equal sign.
