The algorithm of polynomial division was derived from the long division of numbers, so the same principles apply.
dividend$\div$divisor=quotient +$\displaystyle \frac{remainder}{divisor}$
To check the result (see box: The Division Algorithm on p.367)
dividend = (divisor)(quotient) +(remainder)
we multiply the divisor with the quotient,
and then add the remainder.
