Chapter 4 - An Introduction to Functions - Concept Byte - Graphing Functions and Solving Equations - Page 261: 14

Answer

y=-1.5

Work Step by Step

To solve this question by graphically you can graph the left side and then graph the right hand side. so for -3y-1=3.5 you can use x instead of y and thus you can graph y =-3x-1 and then graph y=3.5. The two graphs will intersect and the x coordinate of the point of intersection would be the value of x which is the value of y. Thus when you plug in y=-1.5 , the -3(-1.5)-1=-3.5 --> 4.5-1 which is equal to 3.5 and thus the Right and left Side are same.
