We will call x the hourly wage. Thus, we get the following equation: 12x +50 =164. Note that we set the total wage equal to its to compnoents—the 50 dollar bonus and the hourly wage, which is multiplied by 12 because the person works 12 hours. We now need to get the x alone. Thus, we cancel out the addition by subtracting 50 on both sides. This leaves us with the equation 114=12x. In order to cancel out multiplication, we use division, so we divide both sides of the equation by 12 to get that x=9.5. Thus, the person makes 9.50 dollars an hour.
