Taltos Background

Taltos Background

One of Rice's most famous novels is Taltos, which was published in 1994 as the third installment in her Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy. Anne Rice is arguably best known for the novel Interview with a Vampire, which was adapted into a film of the same name starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. However, Rice was a prolific author responsible for countless classic novels.

Taltos follows a man called Ashlar, who thinks that he is the last living Taltos on Earth. But Ashlar quickly finds out from his friend Samuel that another Taltos was found to be alive in the glen of Donnelaith. Ashlar and Samuel decide to venture out to find the Taltos, but are met with resistance and must undertake a number of violent and uncomfortable actions to ensure their own survival and to ensure that their mission succeeds.

Rice's novel was an instant bestseller, debuting at #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, a position which it retained for five weeks. In an overall positive review for the novel, Publisher's Weekly wrote that "Pulsing with a persistent sense of foreboding, the novel is soggy with meandering, atmospheric prose that verges on softcore porn." Reflecting its long-lasting popularity, the novel is currently being adapted into a television show, which is set to release in late 2022 on the streaming service Hulu.
