State of Fear Background

State of Fear Background

Published in 2004, State of Fear is a science fiction novel that was written by Michael Crichton. Though the book incorporates many aspects of global warming and climate change on Earth, State of Fear is actually a fiction work in which terrorists plot mass murder in order to draw attention to the impending catastrophe resulting from global warming. In addition to the dramatic plot, Crichton also added many graphs and diagrams and sources that support his own beliefs on global warming, which many scientists dismiss as biased and partially incorrect.

State of Fear became extremely popular when it was first published, reaching the top bestseller on Amazon and was second on the New York Times Bestseller list for a week. Though the general public received the book well, some critics did not like the integration of scientific facts with the complex plot, especially with the opinions of Crichton himself mixed in as well.
