    Compare and contrast Shuggie’s and Eugene’s impressions of the guests at Agnes’s one-year anniversary of sobriety party. What does Eugene see in the AA members, and what does Shuggie see? What do their impressions reflect about the way each character sees the world?

    As students refer back to the scene in question, they will observe that Shuggie feels immediately at ease with the AA members and he sees their humanity, goodness, politeness, and cheer (276, 277), while Eugene sees them as defective (“There was Chapel in his stern face, and he couldn’t help but look down his nose at the ragged band sat around the place” (278)).
