Biography of Douglas Stuart

Douglas Stuart is a Scottish-American novelist and former fashion designer.

Born to a working-class family in Glasgow, Stuart was raised by his alcoholic mother after his father left the family. His mother died when Stuart was sixteen, an event that would later become the basis for the climax of his debut novel, Shuggie Bain.

Stuart studied textiles and art before moving to New York City at twenty-four to work for various designer labels. Thirty-two publishers in the U.S. rejected the manuscript for Shuggie Bain before Grove Atlantic bought it. The novel went on to win the 2020 Booker Prize.

Stuart lives in New York City and is married to Michael Cary, an art curator.
