Sound of Violin
The four different timelines that are a century or two apart are interconnected in more ways than just shared history. The first instance of the violin music is when Edwin wanders in the forest and hears the violin playing. This same occurrence will take place in the subsequent timelines which connect with the events far into the future. It demonstrates the interconnectedness of humanity and the human experience even when it does not feel like such.
Moon Colonies
In the future, humans have colonized the moon and built colonies to mitigate the overcrowding on Earth. As such, people live far apart from each other with space travel to visit or go back and forth. The moon colonies symbolize the illusion of disconnectedness that rules the reality of human beings. This reflects the main themes of loneliness and human connections since distance—physical or otherwise—does not take away from our connectedness.
Pandemic
The novel alludes to the global pandemic that took over the world during the writing process. Within the story itself, the characters are facing epidemics and pandemics throughout history. The allusion to Covid-19 highlights the sense of danger that humanity has felt through different times in our past and present.
Global Warming
The narrative delves into the current issue of climate change and the imminent threat to our future. It illustrates a future where global warming has affected Earth through droughts and uninhabitable conditions. The motif aims to tackle the existential threat that we are the last generation to execute solutions for before it is too late.
