Sea of Tranquility Summary

Sea of Tranquility is a captivating story authored by Emily St. John Mandel and known for divulging details about time travel. The starring characters in the book exist in different times but their lives converge ultimately. Edwin St. Andrew, Olive Llewellyn, and Gaspery-Jacques Roberts are the main characters in the book and their lives match up despite living in varied periods. Edwin is a time traveler, Olive an author, and Roberts a detective. The characters’ lives depict real-life situations experienced by humans in the contemporary world. For instance, the consequences suffered by Edwin are due to his obstinacy, a situation reflected in the current world especially during the pandemic.

Edwin is an outcast living on the West coast of Canada during the 1910s. The continual use of vulgar language against random people saw him isolated even by close friends. The situation culminates in him being banished to a reclusive place where his life changes forever. The desire of joining an imaginary guitarist indulges his mind and the young man contemplates enjoying the moments of his time. On the other hand, Olive is an author who has decided to conduct a book tour on planet earth. Olive begins the tour in New York City where she experiences a new world full of opportunities.

During the tour, Olive longs for family members back home, an experience felt by almost every traveler. Olive’s hometown is referred to as Colony Two in Moon Colony. In the future, Gaspery-Jacques is tasked with the investigation of certain events. The young man unravels mysteries that correspond to experiences faced by Edwin and Olive. The lives of the characters represent experiences in the modern world.
