Introduction to Prometheus Bound

Less is known about Prometheus Bound than other plays of its era. Though it is classically attributed to Aeschylus, scholars today dispute that. Furthermore, its publication date is uncertain--it is theorized to have been written late in Aeschylus's career, or even later, in the 5th century B.C. We do know that Prometheus Bound is the first play of a trilogy. The other two plays--Prometheus Unbound and Prometheus the Fire-Bearer--have not survived. Alone, the play feels incomplete--we do not know how it was meant to function in the trilogy.
