    The "I" in Poetry

    Creative Writing

    Objective:

    Students will learn to better search for textual clues and to imagine the speaker of a poem as a character

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.3.D; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.5

    Structure:

    The students will imagine and create a biography of the speaker of "The Tower" based on the clues in the text, without consulting outside sources. What can we detect from the clues in the text? Where id the speaker from? How old is he? Is it a "he" at all?

    The main purpose of this exercise is to get the students to understand the difference between the "speaker" and the "author".
