'Fossil fuels'

Klein explains, "But it wasn't only learning about climate changed that moved these young people to march out of class en masse. For a great many of them, it was also living it." Science offers arguments concerning the consequences of fossil fuels that result in adverse climate changes such as prolonged drought. The objection of new fossil fuel investments is intended to prevent additional global warming which arises from the utilization of the fuel.

‘Hurricane Maria’

Klein writes, “Some kids arrived draped in (in New York) the island’s flag, a reminder of the relatives and friends still suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the 2017 storm that knocked out electricity and water in large parts of the territory for the better part of a year.” The hurricane is emblematic of the climate crisis in Puerto Rico. Its effects disrupt the lives of the Puerto Ricans excessively. The instance of the hurricane confirms that Islands too are at risk of absolute destruction due to the climate crisis.

‘Asperger’s Syndrome’

Klein writes, “Eventually, she was diagnosed with selective mutism, obsessive compulsive disorder, and a form of autism that used to be called Asperger's syndrome. That last diagnosis helped explain why Greta took what she was learning about climate change so much harder and more personally than many of her peers." The syndrome contributes to Thunberg's obsession with climate change. Her obsession is supernormal because the mutism alarms more than her age mates. She is mentally involved in the campaign more than experienced scientists in matters of climate due to the syndrome.

Othering

In regard to 'Othering' Klein declares, "A culture that places so little value on black and brown lives that it is willing to let human beings disappear beneath the waves…will also be willing to let the countries where black and brown people lives disappear beneath the waves, or desiccate the arid heat." Here, Klein is referring to the intersection between race, environmental degradation and culture. Cultures which deem minorities such as blacks and brown people as 'others' could turn a blind eye to activities that could destroy environments where the 'others' reside. Undervaluing the lives of minorities encourages environmental racism.

Environmentalism

Klein explains, “Speaking to his (Edward Said) colleague Robin Nixon, then at Columbia University, he once described environmentalism as “the indulgence of spoiled tree-huggers who lack a proper cause.” Environmentalism is a flawed movement which lacks a precise focus for it generally focuses on pollution matters without narrowing down to the implications of climate change of farming, yet farming is mandatory for the endurance of humanity. Emissions have contributed to desertification in the Middle East, yet this fact is largely overlooked under environmentalism. Environmentalists should redefine their focus to ensure that it focuses on all matters that impact the survival of human beings.
