Kind of Activity:
Students will be able to make connections between the themes, plot, and real world events.
Common Core Standards:
To begin this activity, ask students: what are the major themes that appear in Notes from Underground? Students will likely list things like: free will, consciousness, loneliness, literature, philosophy, suffering, revenge, and economic class. Make a list together on the board. Students should also be taking notes. Encourage students to say a little bit about each theme. You might ask questions, like:
• How does this theme pertain to the Underground Man?
