Based on the information provided in the first chapter, how would you describe the protagonist, known as The Underground Man?
The Underground Man believes he is a sick and wicked man. He should be under a physician’s treatment because of his diseased liver, but he refuses a doctor’s help. He is superstitious even though he is educated. He is forty years old, and he used to be in the civil service. He was a rude official (and liked being that way), but he had enough integrity not to take bribes.
What contradictions do you notice in the first chapter? What is the effect of these contradictions on our understanding of the narrative?
