Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is the name given to the man who in the Bible was sent on Earth to help mankind get closer to God. Lewis discusses Jesus’s role in Christianity and his own point of view regarding Jesus’s importance and power. The reason why Lewis discusses Jesus so much is because Jesus is an important person in the Christian faiths. Lewis argues that Jesus was not just a great teacher or just a human, as he is presented in many religions, but that he is the reason why now today we can get closer to God. Lewis argues that Jesus gave humanity a second chance after Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden.
Adam and Eve
Adam and Eve are the first people to be created by God. Adam and Eve were put into the Garden of Even by God and told not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. The two were then tricked by Satan into eating from the Forbidden Fruit and thus were told to leave the Garden and became mortal beings.
George Bernard Shaw and Henri Bergson
The names from above refer to two philosophers who developed the Life-Force Philosophy. Lewis mentions the two philosophers briefly in the first chapter of the first book.
The Devil
The Devil is another character analyzed in the novel. Lewis analyzes him from the Biblical point of view and Lewis points out that the idea Christianity has about the Devil is different from the way pantheism and dualism see the Devil. In Christianity, the Devil is seen as being a once good angel who was corrupted by the promise of power. However, the Devil is not more powerful that God. In fact, he is just a being created by God and someone who is permitted to try and corrupt the world and who will be in the end punished for his deeds.
