L'Ingenu Quotes

Quotes

He passed part of the night in writing verses in the Huron language, upon his well-beloved; for it should be known, that there is no country where love has not rendered lovers poets.

Narrator

The Huron was enchanted by young St. Yves and could not spare a moment being away from her. His love filled him with romantic thoughts and emotions, so when he was alone he started writing love poems in the name of his beloved. Love is the central idea of the story, and all the adventures they go through are in the name of this love.

He was softened by flattering speeches, which promised him hopes; all the world is caught in these snares.

Narrator

The Huron was stunned by the precautions and all the other necessities for his marriage with the beautiful St. Yves. He could not understand and follow the laws of the society, as for his natural treatment of everything these laws were nothing but illegal. When he was told that there is one way for their marriage to take place, the Huron was filled with hope which gave him strength to continue his struggle. Though this way was not easy—he had to go to the Pope and ask him the permission— the Huron’s worldview did not understand all the difficulty of the situation. If he were brought up in French society, not in the savage world, he would never even consider such a “hope” as hope.

It is impossible not to yield to this truth, when it is felt.

Narrator

Again and again the Huron’s simple-mindedness shows itself—he is sure that at the moment he sees the King and tells him how unfair his people are treated, the King will punish the offenders and even reward the Huron for his hardships undertaken. But to his great disappointment, the King was the one himself who let his people suffer—the reality of the monarchy is beyond Huron’s comprehension.

Ever so little encouragement to a passionate lover makes her intrepid.

Narrator

St. Yves shows crucial strength and confidence in her attempts to rescue the Huron from prison. Women in love are able to conquer everyone and overcome everything. However St. Yves’ fate was far from happy, as she had to sacrifice her physical purity for the name of her love.
