L’Ingenu (The Huron)
L’ingenu, or the Huron, is the protagonist of the story. He is a Native American, but as it turns out he is French by birth. The Huron is a person not corrupted by the realities of the world, with a sincere heart and good intentions.
The Abbot Kerkabon
The Abbot Kerkabon is the Huron’s uncle. He is a narrow-minded person, but also wishes no evil on anyone.
Miss Kerkabon
Miss Kerkabon is the abbot’s sister. She is very glad to find out that the Huron is the son of their long lost brother. She tries to give the Huron love and care like a mother.
Miss St. Yves
St. Yves is a young girl who falls in love with the Huron. Her love does not remain unanswered, as the Hurom loves her madly back. But St. Yves becomes the Huron’s god-mother, so any love affair is not accepted between them. When the Huron left for Paris and did not come back, St. Yves went after him. Unfortunately the corruption of Paris ruined her life. In order to rescue the Huron from prison, St. Yves had to spend a night with a man of high rank. This betrayal poisoned her soul and she soon died.
Jansenist Gordon
Gordon is an old man in whose cell the Huron was thrown in at prison. Gordon did a lot for the Huron’s education. They discussed different things and enriched their inner worlds with the help of each other.
