What do you already know about the Vietnam War? What images or ideas do you think of when you think about the Vietnam War?
There may be some students that have heard about the Vietnam War, but do not know much about it. There may also be other students who do know something about the Vietnam War, but could stand to learn more. The teacher should use this question as an opportunity to establish the basics of what the war was about with students, as well as come to a better understanding of they think of it.
