Katherine Mansfield: Poems Essay Questions

Essay Questions

  1. 1

What does the speaker’s assertion: “WE were very sad about him ( the man with the wooden Leg) communicate about widespread assumptions about prosthetics?

The speaker’s grief means that prosthetics is not looked upon as a standard replacement for legs. The “we’s” solicitousness may be gratuitous in view of that fact the wooden arm serves the equivalent purpose as a natural leg. Also, people appraise the worth of life that the people with prosthetics lead by means of the prosthetic organs. The speaker implies that the prosthetic leg is the source of the man’s despondency which may not be the case at all. As such, prosthetics appeal the pathos of those with ordinary bodies.

  2. 2

How does the speaker use the “crust of the bread” to deconstruct “The Lonesome Child”?

In the second stanza, the speaker says: “I wonder if she has to eat/The nasty crusts of bread?” .Comparatively in the fifth stanza, the speaker says: “And if you will, (‘Come play with me’) I promise, dear/To eat your crusts at tea.” The deconstruction the fifth stanza stresses the consequence of seclusion on the child’s desire for food. The child’s hunger is inhibited due to the absence of a playing companion. However, if the child gets partner to playact with, his/her appetite will be roused.

  3. 3

How does the personification of loneliness in the poem “Loneliness” bolster the poem’s key theme?

The speaker gives loneliness a human face in the lines: “She turns, and weary, weary droops her head./She, too, is old; she, too, has fought the fight.”The personification of loneliness, which is a sentiment, crafts the imagery of an old, drained and belligerent woman. The representation of loneliness gives emphasis to the effects that it has on the speaker by reason that the speaker too is enduring an identical strife as loneliness.
