December Cold

In an example of tactile imagery, Stevenson emphasizes the contrast in temperature and mood between the trailer in which Walter's family have packed themselves and the cold night outside: "December is rarely bitter cold in South Alabama during the day, but at night the temperature can drop, a dramatic reminder that it's winter, even in the South."

Audible Buzz

Using auditory imagery, Stevenson describes the murmuring sound that breaks the courtroom's stunned silence: "It seemed that everyone in the courtroom had been holding their breath, but now there was an audible buzz from many of Walter's supporters."

Shaved for a "Clean" Execution

Having come to the prison to witness Herbert's execution, Stevenson discovers that prison guards have "shaved the hair off his body to facilitate a 'clean' execution." This visual image underscores the surreal and humiliating ritual Herbert is subjected to by the State.

Sun Fade Into Darkness

After having significant breakthroughs in Walter's case, Stevenson and Michael go to the beach to relax. However, the exuberance is compromised when it occurs to them that law enforcement might harass or intimidate them or their witnesses. With nothing to do but wait and see, the men stand and watch "the sun fade into darkness," a sobering image that emphasizes how light always exists in contrast to darkness.
