The twins' family
On the surface, the twins' family appears to be a typical, perfect American family. Their father is a respected judge, and their mother is an aspiring politician. However, in reality, looks are deceiving. Their family is structurally unsound, abusive, and violent.
Kaeleigh self-harm
To cope with her trauma and regain a sense of control over herself, Kaeleigh starts to self-harm. While Kaeleigh believes that her self-harm gives her control, it actually shows that she is losing control over herself and her well-being.
The twins' father
The twins' father, who is a respected judge, swore an oath to uphold the law and stand as a pillar of morality to his family and the community at large. However, he breaks that moral code with someone whom he is supposed to love the most: one of his daughters.
The twins' mother's neglect
The twins' mother, who is herself a victim of an accident caused by her husband's anger, ironically perpetuates the cycle of abuse he starts by neglecting her daughters and being consumed by illicit substances. In other words, victims can become abusers themselves.
