Hollow City Irony

Hollow City Irony

Irony of peculiarity

The peculiars were once respected and didn't have to hide, but now they are hiding in the shadows out of fear of being persecuted. They are gifted with something more than normal humans but most of them didn't have a great experience upon finding out about their powers. Emma was tortured and locked up by her father until she escaped and Miss Peregrine found her, Millard wishes to be visible from time to time and Jacob is having a hard time accepting and adjusting to his powers. Therefore, even though they are gifted with amazing powers the peculiar children have a price to pay for it.

Irony of menagerie

The menagerie is ironic in itself. There is an educated well spoken dog called Addison. He keeps things in order in his loop while his headmistress is away. And then there is a human pet that acts as a dog called Grunt.

Miss Peregrine rescue mission irony

The whole novel is about rescuing Miss Peregrine. The peculiar children go to all the trouble and horror filled places just to save the ymbryne. But ironically, in a plot twist ending all they managed to do is help the captivity of the final free ymbryne Miss Wren. Upon realising this, the children felt like all the hope is lost.

Irony of time travelling

"Bombs are falling and we're reading stories, I thought. I have entered the realm of the insane."

The peculiar children hardly notice the things that are happening around them. They are so focused on their goal of saving Miss Peregrine that they don't realise how dangerous the things are around. Jacob being the character that is only just adjusting to the whole insanity that is peculiardom seems to be the only one that finds this ironic.

Enoch's irony

Enoch is a character that is filled with ironic remarks. He justifies his irony with being realistic. His irony adds a comic effect but also intensifies the seriousness of the situation.

“Oh, thank heavens! Someone remembered the bath mat,” Enoch deadpanned. “We are saved.”

“A lot of help you were,” Enoch growled at me.

“Capital idea, coming into this loop,” said Enoch. “Really working out well for us so far.”
