Austin Szerba
Austin Szerba is both the main protagonist and narrator of the story, and "Grasshopper Jungle" is his self-recorded history. He is in a relationship with Shannon "Shann" Collins, and his best friend is Robby Brees, and he has an older brother who is in the army. He likes skating and smoking.
Robert Brees
Robert "Robby" Brees is Austin's best friend. Both he and Austin attends Curtis Crane Lutheran Academy. His blood is what activated the MI Plague Strain 412E, and his blood is also the cure. He is attracted to Austin, but is afraid to tell him.
Shannon Collins
Shannon "Shann" Collins is Austin's girlfriend. She also attends Curtis Crane Lutheran Academy together with Robert and Austin, but she is at the girl's side of the school. She lives together with her mother and John McKeon, who is the owner of the "From Attic to Seller Consignment Store", which is where the boys find the MI Plague Strain 412E.
