Go Ask Alice Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Pills (Symbol)

When Alice came to the realization that she couldn’t handle her problems anymore, she discovered the wonderful world of the pills. They meant escape. She needed “the escape” and she got it. It was so easy, she just had to take a pill and “wait for sweet nothingness to take over”. “The sleeping pills and the tranquilizers” became a symbol of unwillingness to deal with the problems. They symbolized the easiest escape possible.

A diary (allegory)

People want to be heard and they love to be understood even more. So does Alice. Unfortunately, her parents “don’t listen”, don’t try to understand what she wants to tell them. So, she finds the way out. Her “dear diary” is an allegory of an ideal listener, who doesn’t interrupt, criticize or laugh at you. She says, “I guess to you dear Diary I can tell the truth”, because for her this notebook is more than just an object, it is almost alive, it is her silent friend.

Going down (Motif)

Alice asks herself, “Who needs to go down when you can go up?” and takes another pill. She is really “falling apart at the seams”. This girl wants to be better, tries to be good, but understands that she will “never measure up to anyone’s expectations”. All these insecurities make her look for the escape by the means of using drugs. This is a personal story of a usual girl, who doesn’t receive help when she needs, but the most frightening thing is that the world is full of girls and boys like Alice, who need help but don’t get it in time.
