Gillian Clarke: Poems Summary

Gillian Clarke: Poems Summary

Journey

The poem ‘Journey’ is about the poet’s car journey on a dark night on narrow roads. They can’t see anything but the road, and by the use of metaphors, the poet creates a relation between the road journey and the journey of life as in life, we can’t see where we are going. At the end, the poet says that she surrenders to whatever happens ahead.

Baby-sitting

In the poem 'Baby-sitting,' the babysitter’s fear has been described. While the baby is asleep, the baby-sitter is scared that she won’t be able to comfort the baby when the baby wakes from a bad dream. She calls her the wrong baby because she is not the baby’s other but her babysitter, and babies have a strong connection with their mother that helps that recognize her since birth.
