Gillian Clarke: Poems Characters

Gillian Clarke: Poems Character List

The White Bear

The white bear appears as the companion of the narrator of "Polar." The bear is the representative of nature, although he is described through human terms, such as the "shirt on the line" metaphor. He sleeps, allowing the narrator to lean on him.

You

You are the subject of "In the Reading Room." You search for a specific book in the reading room, one which belongs to your superior. Based upon the detail of description, you are quite observant.

Ghost Dancers

They appear in "The Titanic." Drowned passengers from the Titanic, they dance on the bottom of the ocean. By picturing the passengers as ghosts, Clarke evokes a sense of animation and activity in their deaths.

Gillian Clarke

Based upon her own experiences with discrimination, Clarke makes herself the narrator of "Border." She talks about how other people would insult her and deny her entry into their businesses because she is Welsh. Raised to speak English, she learned Welsh as an adult, but the absence of the language in her childhood leaves her feeling alienated from her own community.
