He is jealous that the horses can continue to do what it was they were doing without any distraction. Previously, the narrator and his friends were playing soccer and the rain stopped them. This made him and his friends angry for they had not yet finished the game.

The narrator's Uncle tells the narrator this because he(the narrator) is still young and has not found his purpose in life. His uncle is educating him on how to find purpose by first knowing his roots and then figuring out what to do that might be benefical to his society.

My uncle says that if a friend turns away from you when all is nice you start wondering if he is a friend because when things become dangerous, Will he be there?

The narrator is talking to his friends Doksi and Wanda. He is trying to know why they are avoiding him at a time when he is jubilant since his favorite uncle had come to visit. His words are a reflection of how true friendships should be, friends being there for each other at all times.

Study your enemy mshana, and know him well. Self - righteousness and the feeling of superiority are the weakness of the powerful.

This advice is given to the narrator in an attempt to teach him how to defeat his enemies in the future. His uncle advises him to bank on the weaknesses of the powerful, whose egos will blind them from seeing the issues at hand.
