Why does Charlie find most research “a waste of time”? Do you agree?
Charlie thinks all research needs to have a practical and unique application, otherwise it’s pointless and masturbatory. This attitude is largely shown to be erroneous by the text, as Charlie’s friends and colleagues find plenty of value in research (as well as in simply learning for the sake of learning). Encourage students to express their own opinions and experiences, and make sure they understand the difference between research and its alternatives.
