Innocence Lost

After we see a mass migration of Indians, we are then shown people belonging to different backgrounds fighting and killing each other. This leads to a scene where Lenny witnesses a man being torn half by two cars. Later, we see Lenny doing something similar to a doll of hers. This imagery shows how much Lenny is being affected by the surrounding violence and how distressed she is because of it.

Eating with The Enemy

A dinner scene is shown during the first ten minutes of the film. The table depicts Indians of Lahore having dinner with a British couple, before the division of India. Even though the scene starts with a joke, the conversation quickly becomes hostile. This dinner table conversation imagery displays the displeasure of the Indian people with the British rule and their enthusiasm for self-rule.

Cultures

When Shanta arrives at Dil Navaz’s house, we see the kite flying festival known as Basant. This is displayed with a native song playing in the background. The very next scene we see Lenny dancing with her mother while Foreign music is being played on a gramophone. This imagery presents the difference between the cultures of the soon to be gone rulers, the British, and the natives.

Monetary Value

In one scene, we see Dil Navaz dress up as a Muslim scholar who claims to have a direct line of communication with God. He goes so far as to hold a real phone up to his ear to display this connection. This imagery displays how some people mostly use religion as an excuse to better their monetary standings. Even though his attempts for money are transparent yet this scene gives us accurate imagery of how some people blindly and mindlessly believe anything that is related to their religion without questioning its merits.
