From One War to Another
In the first few minutes, the film takes us to a party where a man mentions the return of his friend Pierce from the war. This statement is ironic and also foreshadows the war like state the city will soon be under.
War Out There
Krauss gets called in to meet detective Tanchuck. Detective Tanchuck tells Krauss how he shot an innocent person, and all Krauss does is try to defend himself. When the detective dismisses most of his responses, he resorts to giving a short speech about the war zone nature of the city. He is shown to firmly believe that he is saying the right things. Ironically, every statement that Krauss utters goes directly against police standards.
Lawless
When the motel gets raided by the police in search of a sniper, we are shown various scenes of police brutality and violent acts being committed. This whole sequence is highly ironic in the sense that the police is meant to represent and uphold order but during this sequence they represent the exact opposite. The lawful represent the lawless.
Wronged
During the motel raid and police brutality, the one person we see actually trying to act civil and lawful is Dismukes. He tries to help the people facing the injustice. However, ironically, he himself is later taken into police custody and treated as a suspect.
